Love, Simon Soundtrack

“Who you are to the world is pretty terrifying because what if the world doesn’t like you?”

Fox 2000 Pictures, Temple Hill Productions, TSG Entertainment

Love, Simon is about the senior year of a high school boy, Simon, who is just like everyone else, except he’s gay. Throughout the film, Simon exchanges emails with another senior student who is also gay; they just don’t know who the other is. Suddenly, one of Simon’s friends publicly announces Simon’s sexuality. Turning Simon’s life upside down. After the scandal, Simon must make things right with his friends and with his new relationship.

This movie presents an element culturally known as the “coming of age” genre. Because of this, I made the soundtrack fit the roll of suburban, friendly fun with a hint of change; due to these things being the ingredients for the recipe of coming of age.

Love, Simon Soundtrack

  1. Home by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zone
  2. Monkey Tree – UK Mix by Mother Mother
  3. Brazil by Declan Mckenna
  4. Supalonely by BENNE
  5. Fade Into You by Mazzy Star
  6. Last Christmas by WHAM
  7. Real Estate by Wild Child
  8. I Need You by M83
  9. Tongue Tied by Grouplove
  10. I Wanna Get Better by Bleachers

For the opening scene I chose the song “Home” by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zone. In this scene, Simon gives a monologue about his everyday life, family, and friends. During this, the screen flashes from shot-to-shot of each thing being talked about. The one thing the shots all had in common was a sense of home. Because of this, I chose the song “Home.” Not to mention the song perfectly contributes to the suburban wonderland feel of the scene.

Next, for the scene when Simon and his friends are on their way to school, I chose the song “Monkey Tree – UK Mix” by Mother Mother. This song has an incredible energetic beginning that locks in with the camera shots almost flawlessly. Because of the energetic beat as well, it starts off the movie with a great vibe that will only get viewers excited.

For the scene when Simon finds out about the Creek Secrets post regarding the “closeted gay kid,” I chose the song “Brazil” by Declan McKenna. In this scene, Simon is casually hanging out alone in his bedroom listening to music before one of his best friends calls him to tell him the news. This news is unexpected, so I decided to choose this song because its the perfect ‘bedroom pop’ song for just relaxing in your room.

For the party scene, I chose “Supalonely” by BENNE. Unlike other young adult movies, the party scene in this movie is very laidback and mild. This cancels out basic songs like “G6” that are constantly chosen for scenes like that. Instead, I decided to go with “Supalonely” because it’s a great parallel to the level of fun everyone is having.

For the scene when Simon and Leah are in Simon’s room being vulnerable with each other, I decided to go with “Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star. Leah musters up the confidence to drop a huge hint to Simon that she is in love with him. With the setting a dimly lit bedroom with the moonlight pooling through the windows, I came to the conclusion that “Fade Into You” would be perfect because of its slow and dreamy sound.

Next, I chose “Last Christmas” by WHAM to play during the Christmas scene of the movie. While Simon imagines finally meeting his mystery email partner, his whole life turns upside down with the anonymous reveal that he is gay. After the reveal, his mystery email partner says they can’t contact each other anymore. Making the song “Last Christmas” the perfect foreshadow song.

In the scene when Simon’s dad presents the family with his anniversary video, I chose the song “Real Estate” by Wild Child. The video is a sweet gift full of memories of Simon’s mom and dad, home videos, and even picture slides. “Real Estate” is the perfect song due to its beautiful rhythm and sweet lyrics.

For the scene where Simon finally meets his mystery partner, I chose the song “I Need You” by M83. Simon waits for his partner for what seems like forever; until finally he shows up at the meeting spot and share a passionate kiss. “I Need You” by M83 starts off slow and calming and slowly builds up to a climax of instruments. Perfect for this scene.

In the scene when everything is back to normal, except for Simon’s new identity and boyfriend, I chose the song “Tongue Tied” by Grouplove. This song is the epitome of bliss, making it perfect for this scene because Simon has everything he ever wanted right in front of him. Not to mention Simon’s adventure he had planned for all of them.

Lastly, I chose “I Wanna Get Better” by Bleachers for the credits scene. I feel it’s a perfect song to wrap up the movie because of lyrics like “I didn’t know I was lonely ’til I saw your face” and “I didn’t know I was broken ’til i wanted to change.” These lyrics embody the story line and the journey Simon took throughout the movie. A perfect song, for a perfect ending.
